  I finally watched FANCY DANCE and was profoundly moved by Lily Gladstone’s nuanced performance. She carries this small but powerful film on her shoulders, making you feel every injustice, tragedy, & obstacle faced by Indigenous women today. While the kidnapping narrative stretches plausibility for dramatic tension, none of that matters when the work is this emotionally gripping with a pitch-perfect ending.

  When an indigenous woman, Tawi, goes missing and the authorities, FBI, etc don’t care enough to thoroughly investigate, her sister, Jax (Lily Gladstone) is left to take matters into her own hands. With Tawi’s teen daughter, Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson), in tow, Jax has to balance Roki’s hope of reuniting with Tawi, with the stark reality that Jax quest is very likely just to confirm that Tawi is dead and at the very least they can find some closure. Gladstone and Deroy-Olson are both remarkable in this touching and tragic road trip drama that highlights the epidemic of missing Indigenous women. Well worth checking out.

  This film fits somewhere in between the whimsical indie road movie type trope and coming of age/ finding yourself indie movie trope. I enjoyed it, it has all the makings of a good movie with excellent actors and writing, direction etc, but somehow I just felt not super impressed by it.

  Think it’s likely Fancy Dance holds what will be the most emotionally powerful dance scene of the year within its runtime. 

  A beautiful preservation of the Cayuga language. Fantastic at balancing devastating moments with these well placed pockets of humor, all thanks to that overarching focus of love. So much love coursing through the veins of this film. Thankful to have witnessed it.
