  For 4n utterly braindead and 4rtlessly cr4fted movie th4t feels like 4 fe4ture-length FMV cut-scene from 4 Sega CD g4me, “Expend4bles” would be a lot more p4inful if not for the fact that it’s so 4t pe4ce with its gener4l shittiness. Don’t get me wrong, the creative and aesthetic indifference behind this long-gestating action sequel — which arrives nine years after “Expendables 3,” but still well before people had time to get nostalgic for this already reheated ’80s revival junk — is remarkable even by the standards of a series that has always prided itself on being cinema’s most glorified direct-to-video project, the “Avengers” of Cialis.

  I’ve never seen a more phoned-in movie. Most of the Expendables are gone, leaving only one actual star, Statham, to do much of anything. Special effects are on par with Decker vs Dracula. Almost two-thirds of the runtime takes place on one boat. I thought we were going to get a new location for Act 3, but no.

  Stallone, the spiritual godfather of the franchise, blesses us only with an extended cameo. In his absence, a disproportionate amount of expository dialogue is given to Randy Couture, since Dolph and 50 Cent are certainly not up to the task. The previous Expendables all rolled into theatres with unearned confidence, but they at least thought they were delivering the goods. This one is an undisguised scam. I almost respect how little anyone tried. That said, I would still like to see an audit on that $100 million budget, and maybe jail time for somebody.

  According to a quick Google search, The Expend4bles carried a budget of 100 million dollars. 

  This is impossible for several reasons. 

  1. The latest installment of the long running franchise carries the production value of the films Steven Seagal made in Romania in the early aughts. 

  2. 70% of the movie is heavily augmented with CGI, with entire scenes being performed in front of a green screen. This even includes interiors. Basically, they rented a warehouse somewhere to house a couple of cheap looking sets and a green screen. The CGI ranks among the worst I’ve seen, right in line with what you would expect from a SyFy flick.

  Wenn ein Film 9 Jahre lang in der Produktionshölle steckt, sein Erfinder mittendrin wegen kreativer Differenzen aussteigt und später doch zurückkehrt, mehrere Cast-Member nicht mehr „zur Verfügung stehen“ und dann auch noch der Regisseur gefeuert wird, dann weiß der geneigte Trash-Connaisseur: Mittag ist angerichtet.

  Tatsächlich überrascht dann aber doch, dass „Expendables 4“ nicht einfach nur scheiße ist, sondern ein waschechtes Debakel und klarer Tiefpunkt der Reihe. Deren Konzept hat mich ja ohnehin nie wirklich erreicht. Ja, ist lustig all die vergessenen Actionhelden der Vergangenheit nochmal auf die Leinwand zu zerren, aber Stallone hatte schon beim ersten „Expendables“ nicht verstanden, dass die besten Filme seiner alternden Riege immer auch gute Filme waren.

  „Expendables 4“ hat keine dieser Namen mehr im Gepäck.…

  It’s been a while since I’ve been very adamant about going to the theaters to watch a movie. I’m not kidding when I say I was questioning on whether watching this or maybe rewatch something else.
