  I'll always love this film. Derided by many, it still resonates with me as I too lost my father just like Orlando's character and it was only after his death I realized how much time we wasted and the excuses we gave for not spending enough time together. I'm not claiming to be anything like Orlando Bloom and movies don't normally reflect my own life or state of mind, but this one was like looking in a mirror. Crowe may know how to add sentimentality by the bucket-load and sometimes he overdoes it, but with this story of that shard of light in the darkness of grief, this makes me cry like a lost child every time.

  Some movies aren't made to be masterpieces but are actually made to be lovely, to be fun. They are made for us to watch when we are down, hopeless or lonely. Elizabethtown in one of those films with a good road trip at the end.

  elizabethtown is like reading the embarrassing and cripplingly-twee diary of someone you previously thought to be mysterious and charming.

  elizabethtown is like eating vanilla extract instead of vanilla ice-cream.

  elizabethtown is like looking at your substantial record collection and realizing that you don't even really enjoy most of these albums any longer.

  elizabethtown is like if an AI algorithm tried to fashion a cameron crowe script using pieces from all his other films, but then somehow actually got cameron crowe himself to direct it.

  I will miss your lips and everything attached to them.

  Tonally, Elizabethtown is bananas. It’s got an exercise bike-turned-suicide machine; an unrelated, unexpected death; Paula Deen; a multi-day, 24/7 wedding reception; Susan Sarandon doing both stand-up and tap dancing routines at the memorial service for the person who unexpectedly died...i.e. her husband...and, keep in mind, I’ve left *out* a lot? But! Somehow! It really does work.

  The soundtrack is (no surprise) divine, Kirsten & Orlando have stupendously good chemistry, and, overall, I had a swell time. It’s not quite perfect, but there’s still a substantial amount of beauty to be found amidst the madness if you just give in to it.
