A gritty little Kitamura pulpfest. Downrage is a simple single location exploitation sniper jam—plenty of gore and a final act that makes up for a few plot points I didn’t really jive with. Makes me want to deep dive Kitamura’s filmography. I don’t think I’ve watched a lot of the Shudder Exclusives but the ones I’ve seen have all been pretty good.
An isolated road. A car full of kids. The deadliest trap since Phone Booth.
Good stuff here. High on tension, heavy on malicious magic. As simple as necessary, as minimalistic as possible, without any decoration. Definitely worthy of the overused "gem" characterization. Hits the target!
Gnarly, single location horror picture where a sniper starts plugging bullets into a gaggle of stranded college kids, each shot splattering brains and causing bodies to burst with fountains of gore. Becomes increasingly wet as the picture chugs along, each character not so much a person as they are a moist fleshsuit for this madman to use for target practice. Similarly, Kitamura is utilizing the isolated stretch of country road as a canvas to deploy every camera trick - deep focus, split diopters, extreme composite close-ups - he's got in his pretty deep bag. Becomes completely ludicrous by the end, involving gory car crashes, enflamed parents and a final goofy gag that’s totally unearned, mean spirited, but that’s what this whole thing is, after all.
it was like a clown car watching six people climb out of that vehicle and it was even funnier watching that girl use hashtags in her dms. that, along with some good kills, nice effects, and a great ending made this a fun watch.
A gnarly, bloodthirsty, super simplistic and very effective thriller. The actors are pretty terrible and you'll be rooting for the silent sniper the entire time, but for what Downrange lacks in good characterization, it makes up for with: gore, tension and pure carnage. It also contains one of the most unintentionally hilarious endings I've seen in quite some time, so there are a whole lot of different reasons to like this one! Lots of fun to be had with this 90min, fight-for-survival Shudder Exclusive. It's right on target!

Ryûhei Kitamura has quickly become one of my favorite directors and I haven’t even seen Versus yet true story! I’m trying to catch up on all the “Shudder Originals” I’ve missed and was on the fence about this one until I saw that he directed it and it was suddenly a no-brainer. I love his style and visual flair. Every movie of his ive seen so far has excellent pacing and isn’t boring at any point and this one continues that trend.
As for the story, sure it’s far fetched as hell, but aren’t most horror movies?…
"Why should it change? Maybe it's your perspective that should change." - punchline to joke about social workers, I old man chuckled.
Are there other films like this, or that this is kind of ripping off? If so please tell me in comments. I know sometimes I am sarcastic but here I am genuinely asking you to let me know because either this film is good or I just have an insane fear of sharpshooters.
Six college students driving home together as strangers (seems like a college ride-share thing) have a blowout on the side of highly desolate road. A long distance gunman begins to shoot them down and the people try to figure out how to escape, that's it.…
Borderline insufferable and grating; starts to finally build satisfyingly in the final 10/15 minutes only to completely and totally whiff the ending.
Shout out to the guy behind me who kept creepily whisper-talking "niiiiice" at any scene of violence.
Wait, no. Fuck that guy.
A straightforward, stylish, brutal, mean-spirited survival thriller set in a single location. While the premise isn’t going to blow anyone away and some of the characters are far too generic, it provides you extremely satisfied with its gore and suspense. Also visually endearing and pulls off the single location aspect fairly well. The carnage becomes increasing unbelievable as it goes on and it's not holding back on the gory deaths either. It plays out exactly as it should and ends on a fun and interestingly bleak note. Overall, this is a very solid entry into the low budget, single location survival horror genre.
Simple premise: a group of 6 college friends on a road trip get a blowout in the middle of nowhere. They quickly discover it was caused by a sniper and they have to figure out how to get out of the situation, because he clearly wants them all dead.
Two great features of this movie. First, the gore is outstanding. Really nasty stuff, and there's much more of it than you'd expect in a movie about a sniper. Second, new characters are introduced to the situation a few times with exactly the results you'd expect.
Though the movie drags a bit here and there, when it is in gear, it's truly tense. I found myself doing the usual "why would…
A friendly and conflict free group of young adults ("Dude! You gotta make your sister's sweet sixteen party!") are trapped behind a van in the middle of nowhere by a bloodthirsty sniper in a throwback to high concept 90's VHS schlock. Straightforward, gory and filled with hilarious bouts of tonal whiplash - it goes from a scene that implies a character's soul is taken to the other side by a wolf to...well...You'll have to see for yourself. All I can say is that it involves a loving family.
Featuring the most inappropriate story of loss in the middle of more pressing horrors this side of Gremlins.
