i'm bias but...
sitting here in my bedroom in brooklyn, a tear down my face, as of 17 mins ago the movie is off and released to the world.
as someone who's wanted to make films since the fun age of 4, this is a dream come true.
i hope everyone enjoys it, I will love all letterboxd members regardless of how many stars, because hey, we all love movies.
our crew and cast was so incredible during this shoot, I feel very lucky, shooting for 15 days in 22 locations when it was f*cking freezing outside. thank you to everyone who worked on and supported this movie.
to everyone in the letterboxd community - whoever wants to chat about…
i think the most impressive thing about this is that i was genuinely convinced of jaboukie being straight and i think he deserves an academy award for that reason alone
Near-insufferable When Harry Met Sally cosplay, my god. Grotesquely quirky writing (so much QUIPPING and RIFFING), over-directed and over-produced as hell, every shot drenched in pornographically autumnal colors, caricatured characters and romantic leads with no chemistry, an aggressively saccharine score, an unsettling and tacky Disney storybook narrative framework accompanied by obnoxious voiceover and distracting After Effects-heavy visuals. Says nothing new or interesting about modern dating or commitment-phobia, does not reinvent or even bother to play with any rom-com tropes, and completely underuses its attractive cast of comedically talented actors. Talk about a letdown! As always, Jaboukie and Cat Cohen innocent.
While sweet and occasionally funny, this stream of millennial self-flagellation isn't insightful, romantic or consistent enough to be a vital take on modern dating nor a throwback to classic romance pictures. It skates on the charm of its young cast instead of finding ways to actualize it.
Things I said to myself during this:
“WHEN WILL THIS END”
“I CANT”
“KILL ME”
“OH MY GOD”
It’s like they challenged themselves to see how many times they could talk about ghosting in 90 minutes. Also the phrase “dating myself”. Um, what? The lead couple is completely devoid of romantic chemistry. Supposedly they have feelings for each other but I literally don’t believe it at all. When Milo tells Wendy he loves her and she goes “no, you don’t. You don’t love me” I was like, YEAH, he DOESN’T.
Jessie and Milo’s friend (Hank?) have way more chemistry than Wendy and Milo.
Also, “I take it back, you’re not an ugly Jon Hamm”?? Milo your friend looks NOTHING like…
Alright this was a total sneak attack of a movie. Soooooo cute, the amount of charm this movie has is off the charts. I put it on not expecting much but pretty quickly I was won over by it and finished it completely loving it. Accurate as to what it’s like with millennials dating these days, #relatable. Lol. The New York City vibes were lovely too. Whimsical and dreamy.
I could barely hear any dialogue because the spiffy little jazz pianist wouldn’t play mezzopiano for like six seconds but go off jaboukie in ur toxic straight man era
Every casting director repeat after me: I promise to hire Jaboukie Young-White in every role he auditions for.
Very cozy, but that may be related to every musical cue in this sounding like it belongs in the ice skating date scene from Elf. What I mean by that is this is a Christmas movie now, I don’t care that it’s set in the fall.
Tribeca 2021 — #12
Every modern dating movie about young people makes it seem like it’s not worth doing. The faux Woody Allenisms do not work. The acting is awkward and not as cute as it hopes. There’s not a touch of soul despite the misplaced Jazz background. There’s not a scene here that could provoke a feeling or meaning. There’s nothing here. If I were single, such movies would just make me give up.
