I really enjoyed Curse of Chucky with it’s return to a more straightforward approach so I was eagerly awaiting Cult of Chucky and I wasn’t disappointed! Following the events of Curse, we follow Nica in her daily life at a mental institution, soon enough numerous good guy dolls show up and shit goes down.
Two things I dig: Don Mancini does whatever he wants and I love him for that, Fiona Dourif is great in these - it’s pretty clear that she’s the future of this franchise which is AWESOME… plus there’s some fun kills, nice gore, and the tongue and cheek dark humor returns and I didn’t mind it. the fact that this film series has been going on since 1988 and has not been rebooted once and is still this fucking good is astounding like wow !!

Chucky is one of the best Universal Monsters ever, and one of the hardest to kill. The Chucky franchise has more in common with the 30's/40's runs of Frankenstein or Dracula than the 80's slasher boom which initially birthed Charles Lee Ray. After what seemed like an initial demise, Chucky returned by folding in the high camp undertones of James Whale only to go dormant again, coming back for a third incarnation which allowed for tense slasher vibes to flourish in gothic single-location settings, using the entirety of the Chucky Mythos but wearing it lightly, and creating a formidable horror hero in Nica Pierce. it feels really freeing to give this 4.5
Cult of Chucky leans so heavily into its absurdities and eccentricities that i find it impossible not to love. Mancini knows exactly what this is which makes it all the more enjoyable. Not to mention the fact that there's split screens and split diopter shots which are always cool (insert de palma namedrop here). There's a reference to the all time great lesbian romance, "Bound" and dabbles in body swapping shenanigans. This film plays to the choir and the choir is me. The world is such a wastebin of depression (Sami Zayn just turned heel) but there's something reassuring about chucky and tiffany continuing to kill people. Thank god for these sadistic dolls.
