  “Now that I’ve quit..I can have one”

  Earlier today I watched an interview with Ethan Hawke where at one point he said "What would happen if people could really actually see how boring, funny, sublime, romantic, elegiac, and stupid their lives are..."

  Writing that out makes that seem a lot less meaningful than when I heard it but I think it pairs really well with this film. I see myself revisiting this a lot.

  Revisit mostly for research purposes. Wanted to reacquaint myself with Jarmusch's coverage on conversation scenes.

  from imdb: This film was made over a 17-year period. The Roberto Benigni and Steven Wright segment was filmed in 1986. The Tom Waits and Iggy Pop segment was shot in 1995.

  Olive Films released a nice looking Blu-ray.

  3 stars for the first few middling segments, but everything from twin (cousin) Blanchetts through Jack White's Tesla Coil, THE PERFECT segment with Molina and Coogan ("And I want... you to love me"), the absurdist bit with Billy Murray and RZA /GZA, and that heartbreaking final coffee break is all 5-star A+ would see again and again and again (and with some of these i have) stuff.

  Part of the Jim Jarmusch Retrospective

  Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes is one of Jarmusch's lesser acclaimed works, but it is also his most misunderstood. On the outside, Coffee and Cigarettes looks like a mere anthology film that is only connected by the idea of people having some coffee and cigarettes. One could easily just see it as "Jim Jarmusch gets together with his famous friends and makes a bunch of shorts".

  Instead, Jarmusch is actually making a commentary about human nature. Throughout all the "Jarmuschy" witticisms, this is a film about how we repeat ourselves, no matter how different we are on the outside. Characters repeat specific lines, shorts repeat subtle interactions.

  Existentialism in a coffee shop. The art of conversation. You know that type of thing that I love so much. Doesn’t seem to be about anything whilst almost seeming about everything. There’s something about capturing the mundanity in daily life and activities that is incredibly intriguing. Yeah it’s just real real good.

  Will there ever exist another director as effortlessly cool as Jim Jarmusch? A resounding ‘no’ is the answer, and here’s the proof if you feel insane enough to need it: Roberto Benigni creeping people the fuck out, Spike Lee’s siblings embracing twin problems, Cate Blanchett and her evil cousin, The White Stripes going Lynch-mode, Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina hitting the heights of British comedy, Wu-Tang kicking back with the mythical Bill Murray, and Tom Waits and Iggy Pop getting bitchy as they puff away on a pack of cigarettes, claiming how they can handle smoking now that they’ve finally quit. As an anthology of eleven vignettes, this is exceptional craft. As a film, it gets the job done, despite its tendency to mill around in non-moments and nothingness. 100% acoustically resonant.
