Chucky and I have something in common: we both learned everything we know from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
Chucky said fuck you to my low expectations and threw them out the window cause hell yeah this was everything I wanted! 🔪
“Additional Editing By Bob Murawski.”
Quick, dirty, inappropriately funny, and sporting some nasty gore, this is the sort of trashy self-aware junk that I wanted out of a dumbass CHILD’S PLAY remake. I mean, Chucky’s robotic origins involve a disgruntled, suicidal Vietnamese factory worker, and he learns to kill by watching TEXAS CHAINSAW II at a sleepover. My rule has always been: If you’re gonna do stupid, commit to it. This does that. Still unsure how I feel about Hot Mom Aubrey Plaza, though (kidding, I know exactly how I feel about it).

Right from the jump, Child's Play sells itself as something more than the usual cash-out remake. The first scene, showcasing a disgruntled Vietnamese laborer removing the 'violence' and 'language' inhibitors from an Amazon-esque cloud-connected smart-doll, had me cackling and on board for whatever happened next. Luckily, the remainder of the film is swift, vicious, and short - a brutal slasher picture with a scattering of social ideas but not enough to divert from the head-scalping and neck-grinding viscera on display. It flies full-speed ahead and ends as soon as it begins, all with style to spare. Many of the compositions are flat-out gorgeous and play with space really well. These filmmakers know how to work with Chucky as both…
overtly flawed but since i expected a hollow beat-for-beat remake and got something that honestly adheres closer to what mancini's original conception of the first film was—chucky as a corporate invasion of the home and a conduit for andy's repressed rage, acting out based on a combination of andy feelings and a horrifying industrial programming logic—consider me pleasantly surprised. some decent use of color and the deaths are surprisingly nasty and creative, which makes sense because i guess if i had an icloud doll friend i too would show it Texas Chainsaw 2; i mean this movie straight up steals a gore gag from Silent Night, Deadly Night.
