Strengths:
Provided a more detailed history of Candyman that was sorely lacking in the original!
The New Orleans flavor is a much improved setting for the story to unfold!
Gory graphics done justice to the film!
Weaknesses:
Virginia Madsen was a better choice for female lead than Kelly Rowan!
The special effects involving the mirror and Candyman near the end was beyond bad!
While the plot seemed to have more meat on its bones the potency of Candyman's charismatic allure and darn right evilness had declined!
Overall:
Can't help thinking if we took the best from both films and created one film that it could have been one heck of a 1st entry in the Candyman franchise!

Some cool moments, an astounding score, and a great setting isn’t enough to jettison this gothic tale into the hallowed grounds of its predecessor, but it’s a solid followup despite almost tiptoeing into the ‘missed opportunity’ forrest a few times.

Even though the movies Bill Condon makes aren't always home runs, his work oozes style, and he's never afraid to lean into the schlockier aspects of a story. Farewell to the Flesh doesn't have a great screenplay—it mostly reiterates the central relationship and slasher beats of the original, all the while making the subtext text—but it looks gorgeous, and it's got atmosphere to spare as Annie and the Candyman psychologically waltz through a truly cursed Mardi Gras. Tony Todd is in top form here: compare the opening kill to the third-act flashback to see how much monstrousness and humanity he finds within the same character.
It's fine but I'm not going to remember it in about a week. Also the brother had a very punchable face I think? Again it's already hard to remember and it's been a day.
perfect sequel. the original is less bloated and there's some ugly early digital stuff + a number of annoying fakeout scares for which i'll hold studio interference responsible, but this is definitely the superior film. i don't really know where to start because there's so much to dissect, the film leans into louisiana with a variety of images; parades swarming with gaudy costumed figures, socioeconomically destitute local landscapes and moss-encrusted mansions—subtended by the erratic panache of a radio host (wish we got more of this guy) who narrates the city's mardi gras preparations and occasionally serves these delectable anecdotes pertaining to the film's mysticism. mirrors provide a multidimensional framework across which the characters' struggles with physical and emotional trauma—all somehow…

Why doesn't Candyman have any candy-based attacks? Like he shoots Skittles from his fingers or traps people inside giant peanut butter cups? This franchise really didn't maximize its potential.

liked this a lot when i first saw it but appreciated it so much more the second time around, almost solely due to watching it right after the first one - this is so much sadder, tony todd's performance is pained and defeated rather than single minded and terrifying, the victims are weak and flawed and scared, and the atmosphere is more evocative and realistic, i think it showcases poverty in a way that is much less judgmental. while the original feels designed to both shame and comfort me as a white person, this one got to me in a totally different way, the protagonist is a genuinely good person but helping people doesn't free her from having to reconcile…
This is a decent sequel. I love Veronica Cartwright in this and I like the radio guys voice popping up all through it. It doesn't pack the emotional (apart from the flashback scene that makes me cry) and creeptacular punch of the first film. But it's enjoyable enough. Annie is a bit of a drip though.
Expands on the mythos of the titular character, but did we really need it? That’s always the issue with sequels. Sometimes leaving that mystique is better than diving deeper because if the writing isn’t tight you leave room for contradictions. For example, why does this take place in New Orleans when the first one is solely in Chicago with no mention (that I remember) of Candyman’s origins starting in Louisiana? Tony Todd’s alluring presence is not nearly as impactful this time around. His connection to the main character, Annie, isn’t as strong as it was to Helen. Like its predecessor, "Candyman," "Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh" is a serious-toned horror film that dresses up a typical slasher story with interestingly gruesome imagery and mythology. Moving the action to New Orleans from Chicago, the sequel sheds the original film's psychological thriller pretensions to focus on Candyman's infamous backstory.
The story begins and ends compellingly but sags in the middle. Focusing on a woman whose family is connected to the hooked-handed killer, this premise gives way to a narrative that limply forgets its purpose until the real history of Candyman kicks in toward film's end. On its way there, the plot supplies a few jolts but little memorable horror.
Bill Condon's film is solidly put together and exudes an aura of melancholy and menace. Some dubious performances undercut the sturdiness of the film, but, aside from those and the frayed narrative, "Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh" makes for a watchable, though limited, genre outing.
