Synopsis
The head of the family is the one with the tail.
The Newton family live in their comfortable home, but there seems to something missing. This "hole" is filled by a small puppy, who walks into their home and their lives. Beethoven, as he is named, grows into a giant of a dog... a St Bernard. Doctor Varnick, the local vet has a secret and horrible sideline, which requires lots of dogs for experiments. Beethoven is on the bad doctor's list.

THE DOG THAT PLAYED BEETHOVEN HAS A REAL NAME, AND ITS CHRIS, AND HE HAS HIS OWN LETTERBOXD FILMOGRAPHY
-
You’ll forget that the movie BEETHOVEN is about people trying to kidnap a big dog to test a new bullet on it’s skull.
-
there’s a scene in this where Charles Grodin is in bed being cuddled and licked by our hero Beethoven, who he mistakes for his wife, and says “has daddy’s little girl been naughty” and it’s one of the best line readings of his career
-
only real men tear up when beethoven brings his little jack russel friend a pastry
-
Childhood comfort food.
Beethoven was the dog I wanted. Charles Grodin was my movie dad and Bonnie Hunt was my movie mom (I, of course, never noticed the almost thirty year age gap between them in this when I was a kid). Add in the girl from "The Nanny", the boy from "Step by Step", a pre-"Everybody Loves Raymond" Patricia Heaton, a pre-"The X-Files" David Duchovny, a younger-than-me-now Stanley Tucci with a broad accent and a gold tooth in tow and the always lovable Dean Jones that I grew up watching playing against type as a villain, and it doesn't get more basic 90's than this.
I wore out the VHS of this and it's sequel until they fell apart and I will never apologize for that.

the plot of this movie is a criminal steals a fucking dog, so he can test his gun by shooting the dog in the head because dogs have the perfect thickness in their skulls for shooting.
im not joking
-
I’m sorry, the dog has been destroyed.
-
beethoven is an integral part of the american dream kino
-
Not Stanley Tucci stealing puppies. This classic deserves to be played on screen live with an orchestra.
-
Light, funny, and don’t know if I’ll watch it again

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The dude that got a million syringes in his chest definitely died.
