Early 2000s techno-noir injected with the formality of WB Kids Saturday morning cartoons, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker isn't so much a reinvention as it is a gloriously goofy and indelibly haunting mishmash of old and new. Feeling like a children's book retelling that suddenly had an overhaul of a rewrite by Frank Miller, this little Frankenstein monster of a Batman installment is delirious and entertaining in a way that millennial schlock frequently sidelines.
Mark Hamill as the joker is one of the greatest casting choices of all time.
The flashback scene is up there with some of the best Batman stories ever told and it’s only 10 minutes long.
it never leaves you. healing is not as simple as many people without it think, it can’t be put aside or fixed by going to a single therapy session or doing exercise. it festers in you and shapes you beyond recognition, you have to fight every day to keep yourself intact. sleep is never easy for me, it never has been but for the last year or so, i have been afraid to go to bed because my dreams bring back the memories and the sights that i’ve worked so hard to distance myself from. it never leaves you, you get better at recovering or handling it, you can eventually live a life, make something better for yourself. but there…
"don't you DARE laugh at me!"
"why?!? i thought the joker always wanted to make batman laugh! AHAHAHA!!!"
"YOU'RE NOT BATMAN!"
Going into this I didn’t know who Batman Beyond was, I hadn’t seen the series nor knew anything about the character of Terry McGinnis…all I knew was that the black and red bat costume looked miraculous! Yet it completely won me over! The story behind Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is great and seeing what happens after Bruce Wayne ‘retires’ is wonderful as the futuristic Gotham City is a joy. It’s a fantastic extension of the Batman mythos and one that pays homage to the classic Dark Knight, while also extending to a new hero that instantly won me over with his charm. The classic animation is beautiful, voice performances great and the Joker focused story surrounding a sleeker,…
Brought me right back to being a kid again and watching cartoons on cold early Saturday mornings.
Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting for Batman to go going pretty much Malignant in the end!
Having at my disposal many of the Batman animated movies, I have added several of them to my queue list on HBOMAX and one of them was this one, a sort of sequel to "Death In The Family" that unberknownst to me was set not in the original "Batman: The Animated Series" but in its sequel "Batman Beyond". And immediately that was a pleasant surprise since I knew of the existence of that series, but I never had the opportunity or interest as a child to see any episode. And although I couldn't connect or appreciate well the dynamics between Batman and this…
The Joker: ,,Ah, the new boy. Ears are too long and I miss the cape. But not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.“
I somehow never watched Batman Beyond as a kid (or as an adult, thank you) but I'm blown away by how good this is, not just exciting and cool but loaded with almost horror-like subtext about The Joker imprinting himself on one of his victims, trauma demonically personified. They should do a live-action version and let Affleck play sad old broken down Bruce Wayne, he's like 75 percent there already.
