  A Passage to India: Dawn of the Wobble

  Before he gave us last year’s masterpiece RRR and a year after his legendary meme movie Eega, S. S. Rajamouli released this duology epic fantasy based on allegedly some stories told by his dad and some Indian folklore tales.

  Now, I haven’t watched all the director’s filmography, so I could be wrong, but from what I’ve seen, it's clear that many of the maximalism that would come to define RRR were forged in this movie, though when compared, that movie feels very grounded with the huge scale of this movie.   Fantasy on a scale of mythical proportions!

  I have never witnessed anything like what can best be described as a grand spectacle on steroids. It was wild, over the top, the stuff of legends type of tale and it completely bowled me over! The opening scene alone foretold the glorious time I would be having throughout the entire film!

  I can thoroughly understand why the film went on to become the highest grossing Indian film in India and the 3rd highest grossing Indian film globally! It was hiding in my watchlist along with 1000s of other films. I had never heard of the film until I read a glowing review on Letterboxd and saved it to my cue!

  S.S.Rajamouli comes up with an ambitious fictional period action extravaganza, that stands out for its spectacularly choreographed action sequences, goosebump loaded storytelling and brilliantly executed fantasy landscape with so solid detailing. The striking visuals and thundering music, add to the epicness. Prabhas, Rana, Ramyakrishnan, Satyaraj and the entire cast are terrific. The movie has some flaws, but the awe inspiring memorable moments overshadow them and ends on a high note with enough suspense to make you look forward for the final showdown.

  My friend Rohan described Baahubali, which happens to be on my 100 movies scratch-off bucket list poster, as an Indian rite of passage, saying every Indian child has to see this movie “or they're not a real Indian kid.” Well, uh… I don’t know why that is because this movie kind of sucks.

  Now I understand there are significant differences between Hollywood and Bollywood productions, the later industry I have seen only glimpses of. I actually enjoyed a lot of the stereotypically Bollywood aspects of this film. The crazy action, the insanely well-choreographed dances, the way nearly every shot looks like it cost a million dollars… it was a level of sensory overload even the Avengers movies don’t surpass.   “My son has come! Baahubali has returned!”

  I watched this on the recommendation of someone who insisted this was amazing and honestly they really weren’t wrong. Bāhubali: The Beginning is a hilariously over-the-top, action packed epic that’s just a total blast despite being nearly three hours. The plot constantly throws unexpected curves and weird moments, from the protagonist swimming underwater to secretly tattoo another character’s hand while she sleeps, to occasional out of nowhere musical sequences where characters sing, to a flashback you would assume will be brief backstory taking well over an hour and forming the film’s climax. It’s super confusing at times and a lot of its appeal comes from being ‘so bad it’s good’, but at the same time so much about it is genuinely great, and either way it’s just complete fun and entertainment from start to end.

  I want to run my fingers through Prabhas's mullet adjacent hair.

  I absolutely love this movie. It's my thing, I'm into it, and I have trouble understanding why others wouldn't love this but to each their own. I'm a fan of epics in general and this is one of the more dramatic and fun epics I've watched in some time. Baahubali is like Hercules, Spartacus and James Bond all mixed together. This is a dude who can save a child and catch a spear that's been thrown at him at the same time... WHILE riding horseback at a full gallop. All the actors are charismatic, the direction is bold and dramatic with nearly every choice working, and the action is tons of fun. I appreciated the story quite a bit, though it's pretty basic, and the film is a visual delight.

  I can't believe I get to watch the sequel now.
