  They should call this movie "Good Lieutenant" because of how cool he is.

  I'm taking so much psychic damage from this year's Sundance film festival that I need to counteract the insufferable bullshit I see or I'll go fully into a despair K-hole, in this case I counter a bad Nicholas Cage movie with one of the best. I love everything about this film, but perhaps nothing more than the fact that Cage is just haunting every scene shuffling about hunched over like a doped-up Nosferatu with a .44 Magnum just stuck directly into his pants pointing at his dick the entire movie.   STARRING: NIC FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKIIIIIIING!!!!! CAGE (THE COPPOLA SAGA)

  Nowhere near as memorable nor as deranged as the Ferrara/Lund’s cocaine-fueled movie (which apparently this only shares its name and producer), but still a heck of a lot of fun. Like, a lot of the immorality and depravity has been replaced by this fantastic dark humor.

  Cage is a delight as he occasionally unleashes some of his Cage-isms at the right time and moment, which, paired with some bizarrely random moments—at least two of them involving an iguana and breakdancing—ensures this will make you drop some big laughs.   There is a point in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans where the absurdity hits a boiling point and it goes from an OK police procedural to an absolutely nutso character study. I would imagine most people would consider that moment to be when Nic Cage's Bad Lieutenant, Terrence McDonagh, watches two imaginary lizards cavorting on his coffee table while conducting a police stakeout. For me, that moment is laughably absurd, but the real launchpad into Cage/Herzog hysterics is the scene where McDonagh reveals himself to two old biddies and threatens their lives, all while standing in a corner, nonchalantly shaving. Everything after became an increasingly bizarre and increasingly enjoyable journey into this madman's schemes.

  The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans isn't dreadfully dull or sloppily disjointed like its title suggests; Instead, It's one of the most truly extraordinary films to ever fall into a sense of obscurity or opaqueness. While getting critical acclaim, audiences were divided. I just don't think they knew what hit them.

  “What are these fucking iguanas doing on my coffee table?”

  Welcome to the real America, where corruption and bad behavior don’t get you killed or put out of a job—oh no—instead, you get all the breaks, even a promotion. Only in the US ofA could this take place. The most surprising thing about this movie is that somehow I am actually glad it has a happy ending. It shouldn’t work. But it does.
