Private feelings in public places.
-
always use the city, no matter what
-
What renders this film so much of its effortless moments of beauty is exactly how practical it is, such a simple, straightforward formal construction, a narrative so fulfilling with its intelligent simplicity and rhythmic blooming of events. The drama isn't strained, but smoothly delivered through sophisticated dramaturgy, things happen within a cohesive structure of naturalism that is easily modulated in current arthouse cinema but hardly rendered this effective. The private bruises are healed through public well being, we are never alone, there is so much beauty everywhere. A lesson for life.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

“Who am I going to live with?”
Amanda is a 2018 French drama film about a young man (Vincent Lacoste - Smoking Causes Coughing) whose life is brutally interrupted when his sister dies in a terrorist attack. Beyond the shock and pain, he now finds himself alone with his 7-year-old niece to care for.
Very adult French arthouse. A bit slow and talky, so it’s not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.
What starts as tragic soon transforms into a sweet and touching story as you watch David and Amanda grow closer.
Random thoughts:
I watched this after bailing on Kate, the Netflix action movie. It started off well enough and perhaps it’s a good movie, but the first car…

Love and the simple corage to just keep on living.

Some major Rohmer vibes, but also very much its own thing. Amanda is such a delightful film with a rather horrific premise. I hadn’t read the full longline so it shocked me when it happened, but I suppose that put me right in the protagonist’s shoes. Tragedy can happen anywhere, and the consequences are thrust upon us. Without ever being cloying or unrealistically optimistic, what we have here is such a sweet portrait of people who truly care about one another. It felt like a dream watching this, and its beautiful and subversive ending kept me in that feeling as the credits played.
Stacy Martin is adorable.

A great film to quietly cry to. My heart ached for these characters throughout. I just wanted to step through the screen and give them a big hug.
There’s something to say about a film that doesn’t try to manufacture conflict — every single one of these characters is a good person just trying to do their best. We know they’ll make it through, but for two hours we’re going to sit with them as they live their lives, struggle, deal with grief, and restabilise their lives in the wake of tragedy. It’s a film about grief that’s never morose, always warm.
It also makes Paris (and London) look so beautiful and feel so lived in. By the end of the film, I felt like I knew David’s little neighbourhood so intimately.
-
I liked it, perhaps in spite of myself, even while acknowledging the simplicity of the story, the lack of professionalism in some of its shot arrangements, and very rushed, awkward cutoff of the ending.
But you know the movie got right? The coalition of joy and sadness. The weird shadow of grief following you around at all times, randomly making you spill your heart out to people you don’t expect, getting upset by minor things, being unconscious of the deeper implications of a life-changing event. The whole movie is just a blur from tragedy to cheerful moment. The main character isn’t the man-child, egotist that often comes with this representation of sudden adulthood: he’s a genuine hard-worker who forms deep…

Amanda is a pretty decent and straightforward family drama. Don't read the synopsis or you'll spoil the whole first act.
Film introduced by actor Vincent Lacoste
