Mickey Rourke bringing Kim Basinger to his '80s modern apartment, drenched in the diffuse reflected light from surrounding skyscrapers, playing Brian Eno on his high end stereo, seen through rich film grain like some sort of Patrick Nagel fever dream is 10000% my aesthetic.

the 80s were such a WILD time, like what psychosexual thriller today would include scenes such as:
- the main couple paying a small child to fart the theme from jaws
- kim basinger clapping like marilyn monroe over a mechanical chicken laying eggs
- a montage of mickey rourke feeding kim basinger various foods (& cough syrup???) while "bread and butter" by the newbeats plays
- striptease to joe cocker
idk gang i had so much fun with this (except for that one awful scene like an hour in which sucks big time & made the latter half significantly less enjoyable than it would have been. first half? 5 stars. extremely fun.) & i always get mickey rourke confused with judge reinhold and louis tomlinson so uhh it was also kinda weird

I realized after watching this that the used VHS copy that I bought for a buck at my local thrift store had the name of the previous owner scrawled across Mickey Rourke's chest in faded ink. A little peek into something obsessive, and charged from the past, leaking out into present day. I wonder what Janice is up to nowadays.

Still adore this film. It would be easy to just cynically write this off as MTV: The Motion Picture, a feature-length music video with a lot of dating tacky soft-core elements. But I always find myself getting absolutely swept up in the atmospheric look and emotional journey of this film, and the differentiation and isolation of Mickey Rourke's character is a great example of how to enhance this sort of film. The use of the Farnsworth character always touches me as well. For what it is, it doesn't really get any better than this. One of my go-to 80s films, it never fails. Every time I dive back in, I think this might be the time it finally sits there…
