Se il primo film aveva tra i suoi pregi un’ambientazione gotica e lugubre, isolata e inquietante al punto giusto, pochi personaggi (sottosviluppati) e sequenze interessanti per garantire lo spavento nello spettatore, il secondo capitolo dedicato al demone con le sembianze di una malefica suora cerca di rincarare la dose, alzando l’asticella e cercando di essergli pure superiore (senza successo però). Il regista Michael Chaves non possiede l’occhio di un James Wan o di un Corin Hardy (a Chaves si devono infatti alcuni dei prodotti più deboli dell’universo di The Conjuring). Il film garantisce la stessa formula degli altri, ossia raffica di jump-scares (anche se piuttosto scarsi; si salva solo la sequenza delle riviste) e azione inedita per il genere horror (ha persino più spazio il demone capra, presenza abbastanza fissa nel franchise). Quella di “The Nun”, rispetto alla saga principale dei Warren, è anche la storia di sorella Irene (qui Taissa Farmiga dá al suo personaggio più introspezione psicologica) e, come nel primo capitolo del 2018, si indaga su un mistero legato al solito “Macguffin”, un’antica reliqua legata al Cristianesimo, capace di contrastare il male, ma che rischia di finire nelle mani sbagliate…Per la gioia dei fan di lunga data ecco un capitolo decente (forse non così necessario) del ciclo inaugurato da Wan, sicuramente migliore e più sviluppato de “La Llorona”.

If the first film had among its merits a gothic and gloomy setting, isolated and disturbing at the right point, few (underdeveloped) charcaters and interesting sequences to guarantee the fright of the spectator, the second chapter dedicated to the demon in the guise of an evil nun tries to make the dose, raising the bar and trying to be even higher than it (at the end, without success). Director Michael Chaves, however, does not have the eye of a James Wan or the one of a Corin Hardy (in fact, Chaves was responsible for some of the weakest products in The Conjuring Universe). The film guarantees the same formula as the others: a barrage of jump-scares (even if rather scarce; only the magazines sequence is saved) and new action for the horror genre (the goat demon, a fairly fixed presence in the franchise, has even more space). What "The Nun" gives to us, compared to the main saga about the Warrens, is also the story of sister Irene (here Taissa Farmiga gives her character more psychological introspection) and, as in the first chapter of 2018, it investigates a mystery linked to the usual “Macguffin”, an ancient relic linked to Christianity, capable of counteracting evil, but which risks ending up in the wrong hands…To the delight of long-time fans here is a decent chapter (perhaps not so necessary) of the cycle inaugurated by Wan , certainly better and more developed than “La Llorona”.
