    Nowhere

    ★★★

Nowhere is my second Gregg Araki movie after Mysterious Skin and I get the sense this is much closer to the man's style and sensibilities. The film is a wide ensemble following a collection of teens over the course of a day where they skip class, party, have sex, and generally lay about. Some parts are humorous, others are more dramatic. Some are erotic, others violent and upsetting. The whole is united by an anti-authority sensibility and a more specific…

    The Meg

    ★★½

The Meg is essentially a mockbuster premise ("what if shark big?") made with blockbuster production value and to its credit, it does not play it ironically. This is not a big-budget Sharknado winking about how stupid it knows it is. The Meg is sincerely stupid, and all the better for it. Unfortunately, the film is a little too sterile and clean to fully deliver, both in its watered down PG-13 rating and in its not always convincing, too carefully controlled green-screen environments. That all said, the third act does deliver the goods of a big shark eating lots of people so I can't complain too much.

    The Lion King

In his review for the 2000 film Dinosaur, Roger Ebert laments that Disney had spent an enormous effort making its prehistoric beasts seem real only to spend an even greater effort undermining the illusion by having them talk. The final destination of said design is 2019's The Lion King, replacing the beautiful cartoons of the original with photorealistic CGI lions and landscapes. On a sheer technical level, there is something impressive at how well-rendered the animals are here, but it…

    Gone Girl

The first movie my partner and I ever watched together in the theater was Gone Girl. It seemed fitting it should also be the first movie we watch after being engaged.

The irony of the film's subject matter is not lost on me.
