Personal context here: this is chock full of Chicago stage actors who have done excellent work in show after show, and now they have these performances that can be part of their permanent work. (HB Ward, for one example of many.) Also love how this is about a certain kind of intimate theater: not cathedral-like Broadway, not show biz, but a secular but spiritual gathering place. Having seen storefront theater develop from nothing on a street of vacant storefronts in downtown Waukegan, it's good to see that captured permanently as well. So good.

The Place Beyond the Pines 2012
Loved going into this with no idea what the structure or even the story would be. So audacious, so good. And what an opening shot. Such great performances, moments, tensions. Half a star off for the slight letdown of the film's last section (need to rewatch to be sure).

Perfect Days 2023
I love how this matches stories of disciplined assassins whose rigorous routines are disrupted (The Killer et al), but with the protagonist cleaning park toilets rather than ending lives. Shows us how to live without needing more than what's around us and a purpose to our day. My favorite movie of 2023.

From the East 1993
Tedium leads to transcendence. The camera just sits there and records all these lives.
