Chasing Amy is a modern love story about a man who falls in love with a charming and free spirited woman; a cynical, irreverent and honest film in which the director shares his vision of on the complexity of relationships between young people during the late nineties. Smith highlights the fears, prejudices and insecurities of the supposedly liberal man who accepts without ever questioning the beliefs that society implants in his psyche and conscience around conventional relationships.
This is an is entertaining, sad and painful film that finds in Smith's sincere, inspired and biting script, and Joey Lauren Adams' magnificent performance, its two great strengths. It is a reminder that we must free ourselves from prejudices about sex, our sexual history, experimentation, and promiscuity that stop us from living and enjoying the present. It is also a tribute to all those lost loves that mark us deeply and pervade our souls as a symbol of a bitter personal defeat that makes us feel incomplete.
Additional notes:
- Special mention deserves Dwight Ewell who steals every scene he is in with his interpretation of Hooper X.
- I was filled with nostalgia when I saw that record store where Tori Amos, Oasis, Alanis Morissette, The Fugees and No Doubt dominate the local charts.
-Silent Bob's brief reference to Showgirls was fantastic.
