going against what seems to be popular opinion here - i don’t believe this film would have been as well-received if not for Hu Bo’s tragic death. it’s nihilistic and utterly miserable, so if you’re into that kind of thing you’ll probably like it. several characters throughout say something to the effect of “things are always the same, things are always miserable, nothing ever gets better”; it’s obviously very sad but also comes off as the writer constantly inserting himself…
