I have to assume that all the 4 and star reviews for this are based entirely on the blast of dopamine that this sequel shotts through, triggering the nostalgia gland located in your frontal lobe. There is nothing wrong with this entry, but it lacks nearly everything that made the original such an unexpected joy. The first movie was so full of imagination and weirdness and totally took an 80's audience by surprise, especially because Burton was such an unknown quantity back then. After years of lackluster releases from Burton and being subjected to innumerable references to the original film, I for one felt a little burnt out. This manages to get by on good will towards the cast and characters alone. Everything else seems to be callbacks to favorite scenes. Jenna Ortega and Willem Defoe are welcome additions, but I sure did miss Baldwin and Davis. How long until we get a prequel detailing the hiring practices and training videos from the Afterlife Underworld.? Wait, that almost sounds kind of fun.
