Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road

FROM GEORGE MILLER, THE 70 YEAR OLD GUY WHO WROTE BABE AND DIRECTED BABE 2: PIG IN THE CITY AND HAPPY FEET...I´M NOT KIDDING...

The first scene of the film starts with a quick, but i mean, very quick intro to the consumed world of Mad Max Fury Road. I never noticed the two headed-lizard,which indicate there must be radiation that resulted into animals mutation and human diseases. We are then, introduce to Max Rockatansky (played by Tom Hardy),who suffers horrible allucinations and he is captured by Nux (Nicholas Hult,Tony from Skins !). There isn´t that much dialogue, and for the way people behaves in this movie, you know that we basically went back to primitive times.

Mad Max Fury Road was hailed as a cinematic event that, considering its reputation, didn´t make the capital it deserved. To the box office credits,375 million worldwide is not a bad number but the movie was expensive (150 million dollars) in comparison to other succesful R rating movies (The Matrix being 63 million dollars or Terminator 2 being 100 million dollars)

If something,i remember not being very blown away by this film. Through years,i made my statement that if i had to choose a non stop action extravaganza, that would be either Terminator 2 or Die Hard. I still have that statement because Fury Road takes a while to get into action but taking my new appreciation for filmmaking, the pandemic situation we are living, combined with the terrible global economy and keeping in mind that HARVEY WEINSTEIN AND OTHER CREEPS HAPPENED...I think Fury Road was more powerful that what i had in mine. It is by far,one the best reboots in history, along with Casino Royale,Batman Begins,Star Trek,The Force Awakens and the videogame God of War.

I remember pretty well when Fury Road and Star wars Episode 7 started a bunch of internet discussion about powerful female characters and terms like "Mary Sue" came to light (If you use that term,Fuck you). When you think about it,The BOOM of Fury road and SW, combined with the Ghostbusters (2016) controversy and the Weinstein-Spacey scandal resulted into the METOO movement. I don´t want to start sounding like an activist because i´m not. What i´m saying is that the stakes of this movie are stronger than what people might give it credit for.

But the movie is not only a story of a group of tortured and sexually abused women running away from tyranical war lord, but also about how we can mistreat mother nature to the point she can betray us. I know WALL-E gave that message too,but this is a bit more...crazy. Without petrol, water, plants, fruit, vegetables, economy, internet and other resources,we would have no other choice than going to the age of stone and then, get mad...we would get really, really mad:

"HOPE IS A MISTAKE. IF YOU CAN´T FIX WHAT´S BROKEN,YOU GO INSANE"

The previous Mad Max films were pretty good but they were very limited by their budgets, resulting in little time of developing and slow pace. What Fury Road reinvent speaks for itself: It is a passion project that took years in development. One just can image the thousands of pages of storyboard. With the use of a variety of beautiful colors and impressive stunt work in the beautiful nambidian desert, the film as a result,is a triumph.

It came out in a pitiful summer with CGI-ORIENTED movies like Jurassic World,Terminator Genysis and Fant4stic, while Fury Road brings the audacious spirit of classics like Raiders of the lost ark,but I´m mostly certain George Miller studied every videogame and comic that were influenced by the Mad Max trilogy. Why? Because what we got here is a feast of motorcycles, trucks, explosive spears, crossbows, machine guns, shotguns, chainsaws and flamethrowers...IT´S BONKERS.

The film could be a little over hyped. The minimalistic characterization and quiet performances by Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron might impress common moviegoers but i´m more used to character dynamics and not so much to visuals. I still understood their motivations and their arcs, but i don´t know,Maybe Star wars gave me the characters i expected in a sci fi action movie?

And As i mentioned, during and after the swamp sequence the film is not as action heavy as the other scenes of the film. I understand that they were trying to keep a balance between suspense and rollercoaster action to give the audience a break but hmm. Still, i can´t deny the style of the film and the shit ton of effort had an impact in culture. I didn´t find it poetic or one hundred percent tearjerking (Sorry Bong Jong Ho) but i do respect what it accomplished a little more.

I´m glad i´m making my Top 10 of 2015 in 2020 because it gives me an appreciation for what i missed. Can´t wait what i should see ! Room? Maybe rewatching The Big short? Spotlight
....
No,Fuck Spotlight, man. I don´t feel the need to rewatch TV Cinematography and Boring people talking in the office for 2 hours.
Best picture of the year MY ASS !
