Ring 1998
I've never watched a horror movie before that made me feel sympathy and sadness towards the film's antagonist, Sadako. In various Asian cultures, holding funerals and rites for the dead are important, for in old folk lore those who suffer tragic and/or violent deaths are filled with hate and rage, and those funeral rites help Shepard the spirits of the dead into the afterlife so that they may be laid to rest.
Sadako's story is one of feminine rage, and…

Possession 1981
"I can't exist by myself because I'm afraid of myself. Because I'm the maker of my own evil. Because... Because I'm... Goodness is only some kind of reflection upon evil. That's the way it is."
I thought I had this movie all figured out until it threw the mother of all curveballs at me 50 minutes in. The last film I saw that made me feel the way this film does was ERASERHEAD.

Toy Story 1995
”Why would Andy want you? Look at you! You're a Buzz Lightyear! Any other toy would give up his moving parts just to be you. You've got wings, you glow in the dark, you talk, your helmet does that... that whoosh thing. You're a cool toy! As a matter of fact, you're too cool. I mean - what chance does a toy like me have against a Buzz Lightyear action figure? Why would Andy ever wanna play me me, when…

"The juice is loose!" - Betelgeuse
I miss Tim Burton's sense of humor and boy did this horror/comedy make me laugh, and Michael Keaton nailed it after not being Betelgeuse for almost four decades.
Though the film has too many sub-plots going on, and too many characters, it was still too damn funny to bring it down. William Defoe and Danny Devito being in was the icing on the cake.
Also great idea to kill off Jeffery Jones's character from the first movie via a stop-motion scene and have him be decapitated so they could still use his character without bringing the gross actor back.

The Babadook 2014
I love me a monster who's used as a metaphor, and by god is this one GOOD.
This movie seriously affected me on a personal level having suffered from depression for 25 years. This movie was like I was looking at my past self in a very uncomfortable way, since then (almost two years) I got help and learned to overcome my depression. Like the protagonist though, it's still there, nowhere near as strong as it once was, but now I can manage it and my depression hasn't hold of me since.
Also, whoever designed that picture book deserves an award, really stellar art and craftsmanship.
