I went into La La Land expecting a whimsical, romantic, musical film set in Los Angeles. And that's what I got... what I didn't expect was my face to be wet from tears. For all the dreamers who are actors, writers, directors, dancers, singers, producers, musicians, composers and other artists, this felt like a little nod. Everybody has dreams, not just these people. But LA is the centre of creative dreamers and the frustrations, the rejections, the self-doubt, the insecurities for these people can be often too much to take. Some fall away, some change careers, others priorities and then there are the small percentage who somehow make their dreams into art and entertainment that effects people emotionally all around the world. The movies like this, the songs we listen to, the performers who make us feel, this is why LA has something that nowhere else has. It's a kooky crazy city, equal parts romantic and heady with a healthy dash of loneliness and frustration. With all the focus on 'celebrity' and fame, people can forget why most people come to it from far and wide; to make magic. To make people feel the way they did when they heard a special song or saw a movie that stuck with them forever. La La Land captures it so well and Chazelle, who brings his own personal frustrations and successes into the story, manages to create a film that will go down as a classic.It also makes me miss the city and the special dreamers of all kinds I met there. I'll be back there as soon as I can...
