Easton Moore’s review published on Letterboxd:
Said fuck it and drove 5 and a half hours to watch this on a 70mm IMAX. And fuck was it worth it.
I’m going to just review the 70mm IMAX experience so for the movie review check out my first review (CLICK HERE) and check out my podcast episode with a couple other people! The Movie Moron on all podcasting platforms or click HERE to listen on Spotify
The 70mm experience was a once in a lifetime experience. And I don’t even say that as it being fucking amazing, which it was, but it might be the first and only time I get to watch a movie in 70mm because it’s finding itself on the way out of theaters because no one shoots on it anymore. The last movie to do so was Dunkirk (according to our projectionist. Yea, it’s film so they had to have one of those and he spoke before the movie).
I do have to say I was SLIGHTLY disappointed because the whole movie is not in the full 70mm aspect ratio. Christopher Nolan decided to cut back between the full ratio and normal iMAX Letterbox ratio. And sometimes it was fine but it was a bit jarring going back and forth because it wasn’t some scenes are full aspect and others are letterbox, it’s legitimately cut by cut so it could be jarring. But what it did do was create even more significance in the scenes a that were full aspect ratio. They felt even more grand and daunting as you were seeing a shot that, I kid you not, was 5 stories tall.
It also being legitimate film was really cool and something I really liked cuz you could tell. In a good way. It had the splotches and such (not a lot but you could tell it was real film and not digital) but the film was also just so incredibly deep and real. You could just tell it had more depth behind it. Because it does. It’s not 1’s and 0’s. It’s a frame projected by light and you could see the depth of the picture. It was absolutely amazing and worth the $400-$500 trip to go watch it because I may never get that chance again. Especially not a movie this damn good
