I swear this used to be rated like 4.0 stars, what happened,,,
That aside, this is my favorite film of all time, but might soon be my second if I ever rewatch Chicago again. I have logged two reviews for this film, and I watched this for almost twenty times already (fun fact: I still can’t quote every piece of dialogue)
The first fifteen minutes were oh so beautiful, especially the Someone in the Crowd sequence! Good god that was divine. It’s the longest song, but it hits so so so many different emotional beats and just ends wonderfully, it could have been the ending song and this would still be my favorite film of all time. And the fifteen minute ending at the end was just masterful in every aspect. Tha scene at the club in the end where Mia and Sebastian see each other was powerfully acted, I’m very sure the both of them got Oscar nominations from that scene alone. Oh I could write a long long long paper on why this is my favorite film of all time.
Chazelle has set an impossibly high standard for him with this film alone, I don’t think he can make a better film than this. And yes, I’ve watched Whiplash which was great but it wouldn’t have been great if JK Simmons wasn’t cast 🙈
