Jack (Matt Dillon) is a serial killer. The film centers around Jack telling a mystery man named Verge about five random kills that he has committed. These are broken down into segments called "incidents." Jack also happens to be one of the luckiest serial killers in history. He's incredibly sloppy and his OCD makes it even worse. As Jack stacks his walk-in freezer with his body count we get closer to the current time and the identity of the mysterious Verge.
I was pleasantly surprised at how Matt Dillon plays a great serial killer. I'd love to see him in more dark roles like this. The gore was passable, and the soundtrack was great. The cinematography wasn't amazing. Lots of shaky cam, out of focus shots, and flashes of shots we'd really like to see more of. Unpopular Opinion - I was close to giving this ★★★★ but the last thirty minutes almost ruined it for me. Lars Von Trier, the writer/director goes off the deep end nearly into Lynchian territory and ruins what I think was otherwise a great film. Another thing that prevented my ★★★★ rating was the length, but I think that and the ending go hand in hand. Cut the ending at the full metal jacket part and you have a solid ★★★★.
