Maggie Thompson is the new girl at school but it doesn't take her long to fit in with a group of five friends. One day while trying to get random adults to buy them liquor they meet Sue Ann. Sue Ann has no problem getting them liquor and it becomes a regular occurrence. When they get to know each other better, Sue Ann starts inviting them over to drink in her basement and they begin to call her Ma. Ma's basement eventually becomes a party spot for all of the neighborhood teens but she is mainly concerned with the five friends. As her obsession with them grows they begin to suspect something sinister about Ma and the upstairs portion of her house.
Octavia Spencer is an excellent actress and watching her descent into madness was a lot of fun. No one could have played Ma like she did. I'm just gonna put this out there.... Sue Ann (Ma) is on the same level of awesome psycho as Annie Wilkes from Misery. Possibly even better in some ways. Director Tate Taylor's pacing and well framed shots combined with an excellent sound track and a mostly original plot come together to form a damn good film. This isn't Octavia and Tate's first rodeo either. Last time they worked together on a movie called The Help it led to an Oscar nomination. It's a shame this film flies under the radar because it's definitely worth a watch.
