Dan Abel’s review published on Letterboxd:
As a deadly disease ravages the Earth outside, Paul, his wife Sarah, and his son Travis have secluded themselves in their house in the woods. They've created what they believe to be a safe zone for themselves, that is until one night when a man breaks in. Upon interrogation they find out his name is Will and he was just scavenging for supplies for his wife and son. He has food as well as some animals. The family decides it's best to take them in for extra safety in numbers. Sometimes good intentions can lead to disastrous consequences.
It Comes at Night is the kind of horror film that I wasn't expecting. The title and the cover art led me to believe this was going to be a movie about some kind of creature or entity outside in the woods. Maybe even a home invasion flick. None of that was the case and I'm actually glad about that. The plot is totally character driven as these two families cope with the end of the world via plague and the internal issues of living together. An almost constant sense of either dread or tension is created not only by the bleak plot but the excellent use of music and sound. I was personally annoyed with one character from very early in the film until the end. The kind of character that always has to needlessly complicate things while in my head I'm saying "this bastard is gonna fuck up everything!" Fuck that character.
Man, do I love going into a new film blind and that wonderful A24 logo is the first thing to light up the screen. I had no idea this was an A24 distribution and seeing that instantly brings my expectations up a few notches. I was not disappointed. This is how you make a modest budget work right. It Comes at Night isn't for every kind of horror fan. It moves pretty slow and there isn't much action, gore, scares, etc. This is for fans of character driven, dialogue heavy, cerebral horror. If that's your thing this is definitely worth a watch.
