Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation

31 Days of Horror 2021 - Film 45

Sam Mullins is a toy maker that excels in his work with making dolls. A happily married man with a wife and a young daughter. Twelve years after an accident takes the young girl's life, Sam and his wife offer to open their house to a nun and six orphans after their orphanage shuts down. It doesn't take long before the girls notice something terrible lurking within the walls of the house. Something that may be linked to a dead little girl and her favorite doll.

Annabelle: Creation is the second film in the Annabelle franchise but it's also a prequel and a damn good one at that. It's here that we find out what exactly inhabits the doll and how it got there. I get a little confused about the demons in The Conjuring Cinematic Universe but I'm pretty sure this one is an entirely separate entity from any of the others that the Warrens have encountered. Makeup and CGI wise, it thing looks awesome and may be my favorite in the mythos. It resembles that cool looking demon from the first Insidious film, though I think this one looks a little better.

As he does in all of his films, both shorts and feature length, David F. Sandberg always finds a role for his wife Lotta Losten no matter how minor it may be. Here she is an adoption agent and that's fucking awesome in my book. Sandberg did a fantastic job with a second film that no one really asked for or wanted. In reinvigorated the overall plot and set the franchise on the right path. The first film is pretty widely hated, and I used to count myself among the haters until last night, when I had a bit of a change of heart.

Over the past two nights I've re-watched the first Annabelle and followed it up with this one tonight. I didn't remember much about the plot of either one but I did remember how much I enjoyed Annabelle: Creation more than the original. Even though I like the original more than I once did, Creation is still a vastly better horror film. The backstory it presents is awesome and I think maybe if people watch the films in a row they might change their mind about the first as a result of this one. I guess it's time to complete the trilogy and check out 2019's Annabelle Comes Home. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all shakes out.
