3rd time seeing this in the theatre. Was able to pick up on some really interesting things in the story that I didn't realize were connected earlier. For example, it wasn't until this viewing that I realized the pregnant wife's death was caused partially by Max shooting her in the leg (she slips on the blood that had dripped down on her foot). There is a reaction shot that suggests he acknowledges his culpability and is deeply affected by it. I don't think it's a coincidence that the following scene is when he finally makes a truly selfless act and runs out on his own to save the survivors from the bullet farmers.
Also, editor Margaret Sixel is a crazy person who meticulously crafts the anarchy on screen. The editing is easily one of the more impressive elements of the film.
