Comparing the two big musicals of the year—Emilia Perez and Wicked—is funny, because one of the film is hindered significantly because of the fact that it’s a musical, while the musical numbers carry so much of the other. Wicked is a really whimsical and odd film that has solid enough numbers and performances to keep it afloat. There is a decent narrative under the stylized wizarding world, but kind of missed for me as I’m not the target audience.

Emilia Pérez 2024
I’ve never seen a film that is currently the best picture front-runner be so universally hated. This film has managed to completely divide film critics and members of the industry from the general public in a way no film has managed to do. Walking into it is a difficult dilemma, because on one hand it seems like you’d hate it just from the ratings and outlook on this app, but there has to be some redeemable artistry to it, right?…

A Complete Unknown 2024
For someone who usually detest music biopics because of their formulaic nature, their lack of innovation, and their overall Oscar-bait nature (cough, cough… Bohemian Rhapsody), A Complete Unknown accepts itself less as a pandering love letter to Bob Dylan, but as the story of a man consumed with his art, running away from the outside world
This film feels very intimate compared to others in the genre, because it understands how to take its time. It’s now trying to wow…

NYAD 2023
Nyad is a well written, satisfying film with great performances top to bottom, but has some of the most disjointed pacing and dare I say awful directing that makes many scenes difficult to watch.
Jodie Foster carries most of this film on her own. She’s the perfect complimentary character to Nyad, and the performance just felt so genuine. Whenever we had a monologue from her talking about something she was passionate about, like her friendship to Diana, she portrayed that…

A Quiet Place: Day One 2024
This film didn’t do enough for me, and had the potential to be a lot better than it was. I am a newcomer to this series (having never seen the originals) so I don’t really understand any references to what the finale had to the other films, but as a stand-alone film, I think it should have had a more satisfying conclusion. The tension building was done very well. We were introduced to the characters, the stakes, and felt fear…
