La La Land is constantly contradicting itself. That sounds like a bad thing, and usually it would be, but here, somehow, it isn't.
It is a love letter to the Astaire/Rogers studio musical and a cautionary tale about the danger of leaning on nostalgia. It is a hopeless romantic that knows in the back of its mind that love isn't always enough to make it work. It draws on the past, looks to the future, and doesn't want too much or too little of either. It introduces a rigid structure, and then cuts in and out of parts when you least expect it. It is its own worst critic, but never mean-spirited.
