I knew this movie would be awesome, and I was not disappointed. The animation is the same gorgeous style as The Last Wish, and although I think the former pushed the medium further, The Wild Robot still looks better than a majority of animated films. The story is heartfelt, fun, and goofy but doesn’t shy away from tackling heavier topics such as death, existentialism, and motherhood. The journey of Roz and Brightbill from feeling like outsiders to confidently defying who they were meant to be was beautiful and incredibly emotional to watch. I did in fact cry at one point, and I could tell I was not the only one in the theater doing so.
There were a few little things that bugged me—especially pertaining to the third act—but I don’t want to mention them in this review because I feel like they’re incomplete thoughts. I’ll be more confident in those opinions on a rewatch, but even then, they won’t be enough to change my overall opinion of this movie, which is that it’s one of DreamWorks’ best. I can’t get this movie out of my head, and I absolutely need to rewatch it as soon as possible.
