Generally, biopics don’t do all that much for me. They tend to play it safe, and try to make the film a history lesson. I think A Complete Unknown definitely falls into this at times. James Mangold is definitely a competent director who does a fine enough job here, but for such an enigma as Bob Dylan was (and still is), you’d hope to portray some of his personality in the filmmaking. What I will say though, is that it certainly does the job, and paired with my obsession with Bob Dylan’s work as well as fantastic performances across the board, this is a perfectly really good Hollywood biopic. As by-the-numbers biopics go, this is about as good as they come, and you get all the Bob Dylan you came for.
