The old Tim Burton is back, and I couldn't be happier. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuicr is a delightful surprise that brings back the classic Tim Burton we know and love, clearly having a blast revisiting this world. With real sets, practical effects, stop-motion, beautiful costumes, a superb Elfman score, and a wild, colorful afterlife, the film is a treat for fans. Every cast member is having a ton of fun, and you can feel the joy of playing in the Burton sandbox.
Michael Keaton returns to his iconic role 36 years later, still looking the same and retaining his magnificent comedic timing. He gets much more screen time than in the first film, and it’s a joy to watch him play. The entire cast, especially Ryder, O'Hara, Ortega, and Theroux, shines in their roles.
I also have to credit the film for avoiding the typical legacy sequel trap of retelling the same story as the original. Instead, we get a completely new and different story with many new characters and a greatly expanded scope. This serves as a natural continuation rather than a retreat. The world is significantly expanded, giving us a deeper look into the afterlife.
While the story is a bit messy with perhaps too many characters and subplots, it all comes together in a strong finale. The original Beetlejuice was never heavily story-driven—it was more about the vibes and gags—so in that sense, this sequel fits right in. Overall, the film is a real delight, showcasing Tim Burton rediscovering his passion for filmmaking and marking a very welcome return to form for one of my favorite directors.
