Before I begin, no. I’m not watching this in theaters because there’s no close option for free near me. Thankfully I had plenty of other means to reach the same end. And I’ve been meaning to rewatch the live action Spider-Man movies for some time now.
I could not tell you the last time I saw this. It’s definitely been a steaming hot minute. Rewatching this now, I’m having much more fun with it than before. It might be because I’ve dived more into Raimi’s filmography that wasn’t just comic book films and have fallen more in love with his style. To think it was Raimi that broke ground for bringing the comic book films into the limelight more than Superman, Batman and X-Men did years prior.
Now I think part of growing up is realizing how much a lot of elements that are in here…haven’t aged well. Now at the time I adored this movie, but I was mainly focused on the action and very little else. Now that I’m more grown up, I appreciate more of the typical movie aspects, as well as the action (to a lesser degree nowadays.) Some of the effects are painfully noticeable and honestly would look better in the tie in video game. If you made this movie today and changed nothing, I don’t think it would be as well regarded.
To wrap up, I’ll always have a place in my heart for this. This was the movie that not only introduced me to Spider-Man, but started my path into Marvel and eventually DC and so on. But I’m perfectly fine with seeing it as great rather than…well, perfect.
