A dizzying achievement of Eisenstein-ian montage, a fascinating and justifiably uneasy portrait of one of the most important figures in world history, and just about the most incredible showcase for an acting ensemble in at least a decade.
Nolan’s predilections fit this story so very well (some elements of his normal “equation” notwithstanding). The biggest cinematic reference points have obviously been called out well in advance, but the fact that I flashed on other masterworks ranging from Hiroshima, Mon Amour to There Will Be Blood to Quiz Show signals just how significant this film’s legacy will ultimately be once we have some distance from its ground zero. Not unlike the relationship history has with the subject at its center.
