I suffer from psychogenic seizures and Lily Rose Depps performance was so horrifying and too close to home that I almost walked out multiple times. But I’m glad I stayed. Breathtakingly gorgeous, and a film deeply interested in the enthralling fascination, fear, disgust and compulsive obsession men have with trying and failing to control and understand young women’s sexuality, pleasure and power.

Made in 1974, Black Christmas must have been on the cutting edge of the second wave women’s liberation movement at the time with the obvious feminist themes in the abortion plot. Yet, watching this film during the reproductive justice dystopia of 2024, I was still violently shook by the films clever subversion of Hallmark Christmas family ideals.
Black Christmas exposes the sheer rot of the worst despicable horrors possible lurking in the domestic familial confines. Beyond the obscene sexual harassment and violence the young women suffer at the hands of the killer, the abject and bizarre details in the film gesture to the wider existential stakes a woman faces when deciding whether or not to get an abortion. the jumbled and oblique references to child sexual abuse, incest, and perverse re-enacting of family roles in the phone calls are frightening to the women listening on the line for obvious disturbing reasons diegetically. But I also think these lurid tableaus performed by the killer via the technology of cables and machines winding from home to home stand in for an unspoken and unspeakable dread that women grapple with when being coerced into motherhood by partners, family or the state.
I think the choice to set this film at a college sorority house full of young women on the cusp of embarking into adult life, fateful lifelong decisions ahead of them, makes this critique clear. My favorite sequence was the parallel edit between the red nosed open mouth singing of child carolers and the stabbing of Margot Kidder with the glittering glass unicorn.
The characters are vividly written and performed and there’s also an incredible sense of dark humor that underscores the grisly tension. One of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a while. This one will stay with me.
