ALTERNATE TITLE: Fight Club, But Good
In the span of a few days, I watched the worst movie MoviePass Ventures will ever release, and perhaps the best. Crazy.
If not for Hell or High Water, American Animals would be the best heist film since Ocean's 11.
Bart Layton's slick, inventive writing and direction gave this genre the breath of fresh air it needed. Which was all the more apparent on the heels of Ocean's 8, which was the genre on…

This movie was a BLAST! I know it's still early, but this has to get some Oscar love. It has to.
Unlike Blade Runner 2049 this movie is not going to set the world on fire, nor will it push the medium into a new direction. But what it will do is serve as an incredibly entertaining, informative rallying (no pun intended) point for women in society and people like me who love good sports movies.
As a big sports…

I can't deny how well made this is, but I can call it out for being ungodly slow in the first 45 minutes to an hour.
This is my first Sofia Coppolla movie, and even if I'm not crazy about this one, I'm definitely not turned off. The Bling Ring looks more like something down my alley.

★★★★½ Rewatched 29 Nov 2024
Nothing hits quite like a pulpy, throwaway airport thriller turned into a prestige drama. That this flows this smoothly and builds to a satisfying emotional and almost lyrical denoument makes it all the more wonderful.
In this particular moment in time (I will never write that phrase again, I promise) I also think it’s an important statement that we are not our institutions, and our institutions are not us. That it’s important to release ourselves from the past. How a…

The 2 1/2 star rating was made for this movie: often boring, has mega-cringey 3rd wall breaking but also features Tilda Swinton driving around in a smartcar and cutting zombies heads off with a katana.

A comedy.....about history...... and Russia..... that's written like a play........ and I didn't love it.
I don't know what happened either.
I guess the best way I can explain this is that in every movie, there has to be a moment that pulls you in. The Death of Stalin just didn't have a moment that did that for me. I saw a lot of opportunities for that to happen, but no one scene could close the deal and get me…

I'm almost glad there aren't too many movies like Don't Think Twice because these kinds of films leave such a strong effect on me and I never want that feeling to fade away.

Fuckin' Linklater.
Who gave him the right to make a movie about baseball that explores the ever-changing music scene of the late 70's and early 80's that is so funny and enjoyable, featuring a cast full of great characters and brilliant performances. I never wanted it to end. Gimme a sequel chronicling the baseball season and I'll be the happiest idiot alive.
*wipes the tears away*

Between fleeting moments of incredible dramatic potential, a subdued performance by Ethan Hawke and the strangest Beatles reference this side of Watergate, First Reformed probably succeeds as a complex character study.
But because of Newton's 3rd law, this also fails as an engaging story. I wouldn't be so low on it if I didn't believe so strongly in the potential it had.

I don't care how good a movie is, if there are screaming children: I. WILL. HATE. IT.
Sean Baker does a good job capturing the feeling of this particular time and place, but building it around the most aggravating character in the movie (Halley) instead of the most interesting (Bobby) was a missed opportunity.
I will give the movie some credit for how it rolled out its plot. It's the kind of movie that seems uneventful while you're in the…

EDIT: Fuck it, this is a 4.5.
David Lowery has managed to make the most sprawling and epic film of the year, and he did it while hiding his lead actor under a sheet.
Rating subject to improvement.

Good Time: Sprite product placement > Power Rangers: Fucking Krispy Kreme bullshit.
Shit, man. All he wanted to do was rob a bank.
Good Time both lives up to and is the exact opposite of its title. This real-time thriller is an exhausting little movie that will no doubt go down as one of the better theater experiences I've had all year. God bless A24.
