Genuinely speechless from this. A monumental, devastating, ass kicker of a film. In terms of form this is such a leap. So uniquely structured that much of the first half of the film operates as one giant montage leading up to the Trinity test, which in its own is one the great sequences of Nolan’s career. It’s such a powerhouse of rhythmic editing, visceral imagery, and score but most of all a total triumph in sound design. The whole scene leaves you in a high really but almost immediately after we horrifyingly crash back down to earth and are forced to grapple with the sound power and fury that’s been unleashed on the world. The last hour here is one I’ve seen mixed reactions to but for me it’s so vital to the film as a whole in the moral question rabbit hole this subject matter opens up. It completely upends the great man of history biopic formula. You can’t reckon with something like this. What’s done is done and your soul will erode because of it. A man crushed by the heavy weight of his own creation. Nolan’s made movies about the end of the world before but this is the only one that seems convinced we’re all doomed.
