That exasperation of trying to relate to people but not wanting sacrifice your own values. I’m repelling people I’m trying to seduce! How can you tell when you cross a line? Should lines be crossed just to make other people comfortable? Except for socially, you’re my role model. 
That loneliness of knowing she’s more intelligent than everyone else. That struggle of fighting a war no one else understands. How lonely and isolating that can be. The first fifteen minutes were deeply relatable. I recently switched my major again away from English as I realized people were reading it mostly for entertainment and to confirm their own beliefs rather than to analyze another time period and seek to understand. It drove me nuts. If I ever said something resembling an old fashioned belief I could feel myself being alienated and I would feel red hot humiliation and crawl into myself. If I wasn’t in the vogue, in the 21st century TM mindset, people just didn’t want to hear it. I didn’t have the confidence of Jane. If everyone else agreed with the Professor, maybe I was the crazy one? Yet if I tried to challenge my perspectives and see the world through everyone else the world grew cold and boring and cynical and pessimistic and awful. I just couldn’t do it. That perspective seemed suicide
Holly Hunters acting was incredible. When Jane sits on her bed by herself I was like… that void of overwhelming all consuming loneliness and isolation is coming over her right now isn’t it? It was. She started to cry
Which is why I empathize so much when Jane thinks she has found a comrade in Tom! Finally, someone to bear your heart and soul too! Finally someone who understands! And the disappointment when she realizes he is just like everyone else. She rejects him furiously, he represents everything she abhors. And yet… there is a sweetness in him, and he respects her in a way no one else sees or understands. He admires her. But not in the way she needs or wants. 
At first, I thought she should give him a chance. No need to be so uptight, right? But the film retaught me what I’ve already learned (it can be a painful lesson): there is no middle ground. Sooner or later you have to compromise your own beliefs and then you have to circle around and evaluate what is really important. You have to choose. If you go with them you will become like them— or never be like them, no matter how hard you try, you will just be unhappy. If you stay by yourself you're alone. Again. Ultimately I had to find people more like myself. I couldn’t operate in a world where I didn't belong. It’s just too freakin lonely. 
This sounds depressing but it was really quite cathartic! There is a chance for happiness and the world will never be as you expect. And that’s ok.
