The Deal is a well-made British TV drama about the friendship and later rivalry between Labour politicians Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. The film is certainly more rewarding if you are well versed in British politics, but it is of interest even to a Swede, seamlessly blending real film clips with dramatised parties. Both actors do a good job and it is interesting to note that Brown also got the chance to become party leader after this film was made.
Like its predecessor, this is a Harry Potter film where most things fall into place, definitely one of the best in the series. Although much is rushed and an important scene is ‘borrowed’ from The Lord of the Rings, the film feels solid and the tone heavier and darker than in previous Potter films. Michael Gambon's interpretation of Dumbledore reaches new heights and this, coupled with his relationship with Harry, makes the ending heartbreaking. The other actors generally do a good job, especially Broadbent as the rather pathetic Slughorn.
It's been a number of years since I last saw The Last of the Mohicans. Rewatching it now, I was struck by two things: firstly, that the story is still strong and gripping, but also that the film feels very typical of its time, an epic 90s adventure (not unlike Costner's Robin Hood in tone). It's well acted and has a great soundtrack, but sometimes it feels like important story elements are rushed past. However, The Last of the Mohicans is still a film worth seeing.
Luc Besson's The Fifth Element is a highly entertaining and imaginative comic book adventure in the old B-movie tradition, though the plot may not hold up to close scrutiny. But the special effects, design and cinematography ensure that it never gets boring. Add to this a Gary Oldman in comic top form and other brilliant supporting performances (including Ian Holm), as well as a great soundtrack, and the result is a movie you'll want to return to.
