Mark Costello’s review published on Letterboxd:
An interesting take on the gender war, this utterly ravishing flick left me feeling like I'd gone through an actual relationship while watching it:
Firstly, during the early stages, there's the feeling of gazing at utter beauty (the film is shot as if it was shot in the late 60s/early 70s and looks amazing - slightly hazy images, bold colours and a production design straight out of Batman 1966);
Then comes the feeling of genuine sexiness (our lead is like a 60s Kim Kardashian without the stupid implants.....and the plastic surgery. Thank you, I'm here all week....... - stunning beauty, almost constant near nakedness - I've never seen someone wear so many stockings and suspenders!!!!, yet a hint of random blankness behind the eyes);
Before apathy sets in - er, what's all this about then? Is it a horror film? A comedy? What gives with the odd setting - for all intents and purposes its a 60s film, yet its set in the present day - modern cars and phones.....why?
And finally boredom - the 'plot' is non-existent: witch tries love spells to get various men to fall in love with her, before finally....well lets just say the final shots are far too little far too late. Don't think I've ever checked my phone as much in the final 30 mins of this as I have before, it was just so dull.......
As a treatise on modern day love and relationships (is the message women, don't hold on too tight otherwise you'll scare the fellas off? Or.....something else? No ruddy idea!), I'm sure its deep and meaningful. But not for me. I much preferred its homaging of those 60s and 70s films (technically it is really good - I'm sure there were added in spots and crackles and even frame jumps, all to mirror those glorious technicolour films of 40 and 50 years ago. Plus you even had the actors being deliberately stilted and a touch wooden, replicating the acting style of the time too), but apparently the director has come out and said that wasn't her intent........so I'm gazumped. All in it was a lovely watch, but it got very tedious, very quickly. More of the final shots scattered throughout the film would have helped, but it was too little too late.
Summary - I really wanted to like this more than I did as it really did look and sound wonderful. But it was so dull and listless, with a confusing message about modern relationships that left me kinda flummoxed. A dull technical experiment for me....even with all that gorgeous near nakedness on show.
