You're not meant to be seen by human eyes.
It's fascinating to see how, even while retaining the social realist roots of her earlier work, and without sacrificing any of the pathos and turmoil of her characters, Rohrwacher's style - both cinematically and narratively - grows more playful and ambitious with each movie.
As with her previous feature, Happy as Lazzaro, there's an extremely light magical realist touch here which manages to never overpower the story or keep it from feeling anything less than grounded, but rather which helps to root the character and themes; in this case, a character whose grave-robbing ways reflect both a cynical aimlessness after the loss of his wife, as well as a sense of being trapped by the past - controlled by it.
The beauty here is that true progression comes not from moving on from the past, nor forgetting it, but embracing it - accepting the splendor of everything that once was, without exploiting or defiling it in the name of profit or something to do. What was cannot be contained by what is, but nor can it be separated from it.
If the past is a foreign country, as the old adage goes, then like any other it needs to not be invaded nor plundered, but cherished in its beauty and wonder and sadness. The past is ephemeral, and this is what makes it art. Art, not to be bought or sold, but felt, remembered. It was not meant for human eyes - but human hearts.
