La Chimera. 2023. Alice Rohrwacher.
Contemporary mythological storyline that Alice Rohrwacher used elements of classical myths that are just as relevant today as they were one thousand years ago. Josh O’Connor and Isabella Rossellini, wow, great casting. O’Connor gets dirty (like literally with soil) rather than his usual roles like Mothering Sunday (2021) and Hide & Seek (2014). O’Connor is on an upward trajectory that could result in awards in the future. La Chimera is a solid story but left me covering my ears during a traditional rendering of an Italian heroic song. However, the montage of the gang of bandits shown at a faster speed like the films in the Chaplin & Keaton era was fantastic. Alice Rohrwacher has polished her skills over seven years and continues to impress us.
