Props to Richard Linklater and Glen Powell for bringing the “charismatic sociopaths manipulate their way through several shenanigans (horny or otherwise) with various costumes and also a police sting is involved” sub genre from the early 2000’s back to life. A genuinely fun time.

Alex Garland has this knack for making me dread the future. His films are just human enough that I can’t help but walk out a little traumatized. I think it has to do with the overt sense of humanity, whether it be relationships in ‘Ex Machina,’ self-destruction in ‘Annihilation,’ gender in ‘Men,’ and now community in ‘Civil War.’
