Despite not enjoying any of the Disney Marvel movies I have come across, I could not ignore the plaudits that kept catching my eye on this intriguing animated tale of many a Spider from many a universe. With a task of watching a superhero movie in this months scavenger hunt facing me, I felt it would be a good opportunity to see what all the fuss is about.
I’m glad to say as big and bold as the film looks is not just where the praise ends, the story is deep and the characters (including the supporting cast) are rich in detail. The world feels like it is stepping out of the pages of your favourite comic book and is taking you by the hand to jump in to it. The Spidey humour is present but the cringeworthy AVENGERS type humour is absent which makes a pleasant experience. With a well selected section of villains to battle, the Spidey’s present get lots of opportunities for beautifully drawn fights. The animation is some of the best I have ever seen, despite watching on my iPhone, I felt I was watching in 3D, it’s totally absorbing.
Comic book movies have a long way to come but movies like this show heart, story and character can drive some interesting tales forward. I would certainly watch more like this.
