Paint Drying

I'll be honest, it took a bit of time for me to really get settled on Ted Lasso. A lot of the humor wasn't really my thing and maybe I found it a bit too "light"? Idk, maybe I prefer my shows to be dark and edgy but it did sorta come off as a little cheesy in my eyes. But the more I got into it, and the more I began to think about it, the more I appreciated it. The first season appears to be the most well-loved and for good reason. It came out at a time when just about everyone was in a bad place and along came something far more wholesome than what we were used to. While we get a lot of good work from it, it is apparent most of our media nowadays is very cynical of the world, and something about Ted Lasso must've been so refreshing for so many people.

It's apparent that the characters truly make the show what it is. I won't talk about all of them, but mainly the ones I like most. As far as the main cast goes, there really isn't a single character I dislike. Ted is exactly the tv protagonist we need, someone that has plenty of struggles in life that are taking their toll, yet still manages to pull through and always remember to have a positive outlook on life. Rebecca probably has the best arc of the whole show, who definitely shinned most in that first season. But come on. You already know who my favorite character is. It's Roy fucking Kent and it's not even close. I honestly don't think this show would've worked without a character like this. It's basically like if you take Billy Butcher from The Boys and put him in a light comedy series and it works perfectly. From what I could tell, I think he's literally the only reason this show is rated TV-MA because he seriously can't go one line without saying "fucking hell". It's hilarious, alright? While he's easily the funniest character in the show, he's also just really well-developed, but that still goes for the other characters too. Let me tell you guys, I HATED Jaime in that first season. At first I didn't even want any redemption for this character, he was just that unlikeable. Now he's probably my favorite character from the third season. I still like Roy more overall, but I was surprised by just how great Jaime was by the end. I think in general, Roy and Jaime had my favorite dynamic of the whole series. Their rivalry was always on point and the direction it took really made for my favorite part of this season.

But now that's out of the way, I do have to talk about what a lot of other people are saying about this show now. I'm actually really confused by just how much people hated where this show went. Now don't get me wrong, this season has its fair share of problems, many of which I'll get into. But people really act like this show went from a 10/10 masterpiece to an absolute dumpster fire. I personally think that in a few ways, seasons 2 and 3 improved in a few ways, but I can agree that certain problems developed as it went on. Let me start with the main one, probably what kept me from saying I really loved it until it was over. WHY ARE THE EPISODES SO LONG? I mean seriously, looking back, I appreciate just how much shorter the first season was. It not only had fewer episodes, but far shorter ones too. Now all of a sudden a fucking comedy show has episodes going on for over an hour? BRUH. At least extend the episode count. As charming as this show is at its core, it can REALLY drag at points, thanks to some plotlines that I could've really cared less for. I was never a huge fan of Keeley, but I liked her best with her friendship with Rebecca and especially her relationship with Roy. But now that she's off doing her own thing, all that chemistry is basically absent from this season. Based on what a lot of people have been saying, I don't think I need to explain why her plotline was a complete joke that amounted to nothing. If you've seen it, you already know. Now look, I like the football players as side characters. Sam, Colin, and Isaac are certainly fun and enjoyable, but I could really care less about their subplots as well. Again I don't think I really need to explain since I'm not trying to go into huge detail, but to me, it just registered as filler that could've been better condensed. Generally speaking, compared to the first season, this one wasn't really building up too much. The first was much more story-focused, having something set up at the beginning that paid off in the end. For the final season, admittedly, it just kinda ends because it needs to.

That being said, as critical as I've been, I really can't bring myself to dislike this last season. As I said, the characters still mostly carry this show, and the final episode really made it all work in the end. I mean that final montage of Father and Son playing, goddammit it was heartwarming. I'll just say that I'm glad this was the final show I finished this week because after watching two devastating tv finales on the same exact day, I really needed this. So long Ted, and screw you Apple TV, I never even wanted you in the first place.
