Paint Drying

After all these years I'm finally using this for a review. Idk I just got accustomed to people using this as a place to post sad and life-related stuff, so I never really had anything to say in that regard. But then I thought, "hey, this site never included shows, so why don't I use this to log the shows I've watched?" Genius. Anyways, what's funny is that there is a whopping total of three shows that I'm watching that are all ending this week. Two of which, ended on their fourth season, both ending on the exact same day. Yeah I don't know what HBO Max (Oh I'm sorry, I meant "Max") was thinking by having their two biggest shows airing on the same days, but oh well I guess. Now I got two big television endings to discuss.

First one I watched was the Succession season finale. So...wow. Did that ending actually...deliver? Like, did they really let the writers cook, and they actually served? I'm really trying to gather my thoughts right now, but I honestly think they stuck the landing as hard as they could have. I can't say too much, since I'd rather use this review to compel others to watch it, but all I'll say is pretty much every character got the most fitting ending. It's definitely one of those shows where everything always goes south, so whenever I get hope that something might go right, I'm just expecting the worst at any moment. And goddammit do things take a turn for the worst. To be fair, it's not THE darkest ending they could've gone with. But if anything, it was probably the most realistic. Each character finally comes to terms with something that's always remained relevant to them, and all things considered, it was pretty satisfying. While I won't say who the successor is, I'll just say, yeah I'm glad it was them. Makes perfect sense in hindsight.

As for my thoughts on the show as a whole. It certainly lived up to the hype. Now I can agree it looked intimidating. It's about bad rich people swearing and fighting with each other, nothing too exciting at the surface. I'll start by saying it's not for everyone, and if that first season doesn't do it for you, the rest of the show probably won't either. I won't lie, there were points where it lost me in the business writing, but at its core, this was always a family drama, and the relations between the characters were always where it shinned best. Logan Roy might be up there as one of the biggest pieces of shit in television, but goddamnit he's an interesting piece of shit. Ken, Roman, and Shiv have probably some of the best sibling drama in any media, especially demonstrated in that last episode. As terrible as they can be, I always wanted them to put aside their differences and be a real family again, but at the end of the day, it's always up in the air whether or not they'll betray each other in a heartbeat. I'd say my personal favorite character is Tom, not just because he and Greg probably make my favorite fictional duo since Walter and Jesse, but something about his story, performance, and charisma just sold it for me. As a matter of fact, every actor was incredible. While I will be somewhat disappointed when this wins a bunch of Emmys over Better Call Saul for the tenth time, I can't act like this show won't deserve it. Just a masterclass in all the major areas.

One final thing I do want to address is how some people interpret the ending and what it meant for one certain character. People will say "They may have sucked, but I still feel bad for them," but then someone else says, "Why should you be? They're rich. They got nothing to be sad about." Like, guys, did you actually pay attention to the show? The whole point is to demonstrate why money and wealth is completely pointless when your life basically sucks outside of it. Imagine having a job as stressful and overwhelming as a business CEO, meanwhile your entire family has either abused you or completely turned their backs on you. These characters ALL have terrible lives, ones I would never consider trading my own life for. They may have money, but without proper love and support, they turn into the people we've seen in this show. I've seen a lot of movies and shows with commentary of the rich, and I can honestly say with confidence this does it the best. It shows exactly why this business is a nightmare to be a part of, and does it perfectly with how much each character is portrayed as a real human being.

Anyways, that's about it. Show good. See you again for my next review.
